How To Button a Tuxedo, the Right Way!

How to Button a Tuxedo, the Right Way! All Dressed Up - Bridal Prom Tuxedo | Chattanooga, TN | Wedding Dresses and Tux Rentals

Everyone's looking at you in your amazing tuxedo, but are they really looking at your button party foul?

This year Chattanooga's best young men and women will put on their best look for Prom Night (and/or Wedding Day) and we here at ADU are making it our priority that you look great! There aren't too many rules for a Tuxedo or Suit but one involves those pesky buttons. Maybe you've never thought to ask the proper way to button them but there are definitely a right and wrong ways. Let's take a look at which buttons should be buttoned, depending upon the options.

* Let's begin with the single breasted one button jacket; it's making a comeback!

It used to be the only way to wear a formal jacket. When standing the coat needs to be buttoned. When seated the button should be unfastened.

* Next is the single breasted two button jacket.

If you are standing up you should always button the top button. If you are sitting down you should unbutton the coat. The bottom button should never be buttoned.

* Next is the single breasted three button jacket.

When standing you can button the top two buttons, or just the top button, or just the middle button. When seated you should unbutton the coat. The bottom button should never be buttoned.

* The single breasted four button jacket is a bold fashion statement.

The top one or the top two or the top three buttons can be buttoned, just leave the last one undone. Buttoning the middle two is a no-no as is just the third one. It might go without saying but we'll say it: no skipping the second button in favor of buttoning the first and third.

* The double breasted 6X2 is common.

The first number represents the total number of buttons the second number is the actual number of buttons that could be buttoned. Other styles include the 6X1, the 4X1, the 4X2, and the 2X1. All buttons on this style with working buttonholes should remain buttoned whether seated or standing, even the bottom button. However, you can unbutton the very bottom button without raising too many eyebrows.

By the way, here's this week's Bonus!... Do you know the only difference between a Tuxedo and a Suit? Well you are in luck! DJ Mark is about to show us in his latest episode of 'Puttin On The Ritz w/ DJ Mark!' Here is the third episode, "#3 Finding My Perfect Tuxedo | What's a Tuxedo?" -Mark lobbies for Tux Button reform.

Video Dialogue:

Mark: "Welcome, Let's talk about tuxedo verses suit. The tuxedo has a satin lapel. And the buttons are covered. That distinguishes it from a suit; a suit will have buttons that are not covered and may not have a satin lapel. How do we button? With a two buttons tuxedo you can button the top one but never the bottom one. On a three button tux never button the bottom button. The top two can be buttoned in any configuration. The middle button alone is the most common. I think you learned a couple of great things today about tux etiquette and how exactly you'd wear your tux. Of course here at All Dressed Up we have the tux that you want. We have a special right now, it's through the month of March. March 29 is our cutt-off date for $40 off your tux rental. You say, "my event is in April or early May." No worries, as long as you come in between now and the end of March we're gonna take care of that discount. You can come back for sizing later but that will secure your discount of $40. Tell us what you think, Subscribe to our channel, share this video, and we'll see you next time!"
